Melficef was a powerful mage that conducted thaumical studies to try to store magical energies in an efficient way. He created many self-recharging rod spells that are still commonly used today, as well as the thaumic bomb, a device storing a massive amount of mana and releasing it in a violent explosion - such an explosion actually killed the unfortunate Melficef himself.
